Meet The Developer!
What was the initial inspiration for your app?
My youngest son who has autism was my inspiration for making applications. When my son got his iPad I searched the App Store to find apps that I felt would best suit his needs, I found a lot of apps had cartoon type graphics and I knew that my son and many other children on the spectrum learn best with real photos. I then asked my son’s speech therapist at the time if she would be interested in creating apps and our partnership, i Get It! was born.
Many children with autism struggle with retaining and recalling things and the way our apps are set up with books and pages allows the user to add their custom photos, text and audio which teaches children things relative to world around them. We have several apps available on iTunes for children with special needs and they all use the same framework which makes it easy for the users to maneuver. This app, All About Me Storybook teaches children their personal information, such as name, address, birthday, phone numbers, family members, etc. Information is entered by the user and it is a great tool to monitor if the child is retaining all their personal info by revisiting the app on a consistent basis.
What is your favorite aspect of your app?
We love that the user can add as much information on the pages as they want or they can enter as little information as they want. You can hide chapters so if you want to focus on just one thing, for example just the “Name” chapter, you can turn off all the other chapters so the child is not distracted with the other choices. The pages within the chapter can also be turned off/on so the learning is very customized based on the child. In addition we have check marks that appear on the page when a child taps the photo to give them the visual reinforcement that so many of them love when they complete a step.
Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Our apps are great learning tools for all children, we have gotten many emails from parents, teachers and therapists expressing their thanks for having apps to help their students/children learn specific personal information. All About Me Storybook app teaches them personal information, i Get… People in My Community teaches them about people in their community and i See-quence… My Day at School allows teachers to customize schedules for their students so they know exactly what is expected of them or what will happen next. The best part is our apps are multi-user apps, so you can make specific books for each child/student.
